Botanical Name: Vetiveria zizanoides

Plant Part: Root

Origin: Indonesia

Processing Method: Steam distilled

Description / Color / Consistency: Has a medium consistency, and is a brown to reddish brown liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A base note with a strong aroma, has an earthy, woody scent characteristic of oils derived from roots, with a rich note that is popular in products designed for men.

Blends With: Cedarwood, Chamomile, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemongrass, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Spikenard, Vanilla, and Ylang-ylang.

Product Abstract: Vetiver Essential Oil is distilled from the roots of a grass used in India and Sri Lanka for the creation of woven matting. It is used in aromatherapy and massage therapy, in skin-care products, and as a base note in perfumery. The word vetiver comes from the Tamil word that means 'hatcheted up', a description of the way in which the roots are collected.

Note: This oil can be very thick. If so, we would recommend placing the bottle in a very hot water bath, and changing the water frequently until it is back to its liquid state, then gently agitating it before use.

Cautions: Dilute before use; May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

I never get bored of Vetiver EO & this NDA one is great! I had an ancient bottle of Vetiver that was aged to perfection & I was so sad when it ran out, but this one is still a lot like it. I prefer the smoky Vetivers more than the greener ones & this one is smoky, earthy, and deep. It is an oil to reach for when you just need that little bit of earthy groundedness to be with you all day & since a little goes a long way, you'll have plenty of time to let your bottle age too!

There are lighter versions of this oil, though I am pleased with this New Directions Aromatics offering of Vetiver. I have a lighter colored EO from another supplier. I use this mainly in perfumed skin lotion blends. It is a great addition to any EO arsenal!

When I purchased this oil I had no idea about it. At first I didn't enjoy the fragrance but it has grow on me to the point that I really enjoy it. I love the calmness it provides when diffusing.

I purchased a fairly good quality Sri Lankan Vetiver from ND a few years ago that was viscous, pale in colour and had none of the harsh undertones associated with the cheaper and poor quality sources. This vetiver is of great value but not nearly as good as the previous offering. It would be great if ND could offer one or two more premium sources - as they do with other oils - and I'm quite certain that discerning customers would be willing to pay more for these!

I agree with others that this scent grew on me. I had took whiff and wasn't impressed but the scent stayed with me and I found myself taking another whiff, every time I would go by the bottle. It is intoxicating, and I love blending with with Frankincense for a very calming blend.

I love this oil. You only need a few drops. It grounds the citrus oils and makes for an incredible blend. Definately one of my favorites.

I continue to use this EO in many blends I diffuse because of its powerful benefits but it definitely is not a favourite of my family. They say it smells like smelly socks.

I love this oil! It is earthy and blends well with other oils when making a "manly" or earthy scent for perfumes and soaps. Love it and will purchase again.

If birch is the effete interior designer in the family, vetiver is the straightforward farmer. Grounding. One day in India I must get a vetiver fan to add this oil to, to intensify its cooling sludge or a smell reminiscent of a.. wait for it, an ashtray. There must be some chemical affinity with tobacco. I just came back from Cuba where I bought some cigars -- I love the smell even though I don't smoke. Smokey is the important word for vetiver. Like a cigar, it is pure male. An olfactory man cave. Inhale pure earthy indulgence with no pretensions.

I love this Vetivert. I blended with lemongrass and a bit of bergamot. I loved the result. This is definitely one of my favourites. Also nice that ND are able to offer at some very competitive prices.

this is like a kinder, gentler version of patchouli--and nowhere near as woody/dusty/musty if that is what makes you not a fan of patchouli. when this oil is blended/diluted/mixed, it smells like hay, wood, and according to aromatherapists it works for depression. it is cheering and earthy and warm. i do not know if you believe in this kind of lore, but it is meant to draw money as well. :-) lovely oil!!!

I wasn't impressed with the scent of this oil, but from the other reviews it seems it would help to let it sit for awhile before making a final judgement. The earthy scent is indeed strange, and can't bring myself to use it right now. I tried using it with Jasmine to make a body powder and the scent turned out kind of gross. I will experiment with the suggested blends and hope for better creations.

The first batch of vetiver I bought from New Directions was in 2007. I decided to park it awhile to see how it would age. I've opened it now in 2012 and let me tell you - it's instant meditation in a bottle. The other curious thing is every where I go, men, women and children sniff (and loudly too) when they get by me. I own over 260 essential oils and I assure you that no other e.o. does that across the board. Not even my aged sandalwoods (Hawaiian, Mysore, Australian, etc) evokes such a positive response. It's a must have in your collection.

This oil has a strange earthy, smoky aroma out of the bottle but when used with other EO's this is very calming and relaxing. The scent grows on you and blends well with vanilla, lavender and even tea tree oil! I use this in my scent diffuser mixed with vanilla, great mix!

Great for inducing deep sleep. I prefer Vetiver as a blending Essential Oil (EO) versus solo when in a carrier oil unless you really do love its characteristic strong smokey / earthy aroma. A little goes a long way. Great for grounding synergy blends. Adds a beautiful complexity to final product. Also, great in wrinkle -smoothing blends in products. Love it! Thank-you NDA for your amazing therapeutic grade EO's such as this amazing Vetiver. I am a Vetiver fan now. I bought this one on a whim because I needed a base note to add to my collection of EO's. Will repurchase!

Well, it has been mentioned that people either love it or hate it. Unfortunately, i hate it! Its a little too smoky for me, to me, it smells exactly like smoke flavour from the grocery store. I won't give it a bad rating, because i have nothing to compare it too, this is the first time i bought Vetiver, and the description seems to fit, it's just me. The name is lovely to say though =)

I love this vetiver. It is truly deeply relaxing. I diffuse it and it is lovely! If you are new to vetiver, give it a chance. It's earthy green fragrance may be a bit off-putting at first but there is a reason it is so loved by perfumers and aromatherapists alike NDA brings us such quality at unbeatable prices!

This is a scent that I love. I agree with other commenters that people either love or hate it. I add just a drop in combination with Sweet Orange oil, in a cream and the result is much more full, balanced and complex than using the Sweet Orange on it's own.

NDA vetiver is the most balancing and grounding I have tried to date and I have tried several. I use it as a fixative in my fragrances...it only takes a drop ...oh but what a difference it makes. It creates truly harmonious blends. I diffuse it at the end of the day and it helps my whole family relax and regain a peaceful dispositon. I find it brings a joyous calm and centering to us all. I use it in my creams, lotions, serums etc. A little goes a long way so it never overpowers if used in proper proportions. Finally when feeling out of sorts and stressed it is always vetiver I reach for . A couple of sniffs seems to calm the mind and spirit. Isn't nature beautiful?

I have no previous experience with vetiver, and frankly I find the smell overpowering, and I'm not sure I like it ... however, i can imagine this as a good base for masculine perfumes, and some unisex woodsy smells.

I could not make my soap collections without using vetiver. It mixes very well with fir tree, pine etc. Its earthy (or moss) smell is loved or hated. Some vetiver smell is more earthy, some has a smokey smell (Java). Here, at New Directions, the vetiver I found is more earthy : the kind I prefer.

I bought this based on its supposed relaxing effect, but it\'s actually very unpleasant. Alright, to be more blunt it stinks. I don\'t agree that vetiver \"has a Rich, sweetly satisfying note.\" But I do agree that the scent is STRONG. I tried mixing this with lavender oil and jasmine absolute, but the vetiver very overpowering.

New Directions Aromatics Response:

Vetiver remains one of our best selling Essential Oils. The scent is consistent with the standards for this product, and we continue to sell heavily to aromatherapy schools throughout North America.

Those without experience with Vetiver may find the oil stronger than many other Essential Oils. Nonetheless, this sweetly rich and exotic Essential Oil is a fantastic addition to synergy blends; as with most fixatives, small amounts are required.

I think one of the most under-rated essential oils out there, this beautifully grounding and earthy scent is perfect base/balance for so many blends/snergies and a definite must have for any aromatherapist. This one is perfect!
