Product Abstract: In Greek its name means 'royal remedy' or 'king'. In the 16th century, powdered basil was used to treat migraines and chest infections. The ancient Egyptians believed that it would open the gates of heaven to a dying person, and the Hindus use Basil sprigs to protect the dead from evil while in transition between lives. Western European lore sometimes claimed that it was a symbol of evil, while the Eastern Orthodox Church used it in the making of holy water.

Rating: Very pungent herbaceous scent! Tried it in melt & pour soap and on its own, it is way too intense, even at 1%! Mixed 1/3 basil with 2/3 lemongrass and got a nice citrusy herb garden scent out of it. Still not for everyone though, seems more like a niche scent.

Rating: I bought this product a while back. I combine this sweet basil EO with lavender and lemongrass, add water, making an amazing, wonderfully aromatic insect repellent and healer. I also put a few drops in my laundry to eliminate odor and freshen up the final laundry results. Love it
Rating: I have purchased about 15 different EOs from NDA and have been satisfied with all of them...until I got this one. I really don't understand how this got such a high review, it does not smell anything like basil! The initial smell from the bottle was pretty harsh and I hoped it would be better when diffused, but no such luck.
Rating: Not what I was expecting but I like it. Almost has an anise quality to it.

Rating: Bought this quite a while ago and am still trying to figure out how to use it in a soap!! Very sharp , herbal basil scent that really comes through in any blend, so be careful how much you use. I will use up what I have bought but not sure I will bvuy more.

Rating: Used it in CP soap, made the whole place smell like pesto... A really satisfying scent.
Rating: If you're looking for "healthy and green" combined with a hint of sweetness this is for you! I like this EO not so much for the scent but for its health benefits. I just might be coming back to it! behaved well in CP shampoo bars.
Rating: Fresh basil herb scent with aniseed (black licorice) undertones. I slightly prefer another brand, but the price point here can't be beat. Basil is useful for GI complaints (nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, morning sickness, gas, cramps) as well as helps with hair and skin.

Rating: This oil has a really nice licorice-y scent to it. I really like it!
By:Armando, Toronto, Ontario Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 25-Feb-2012
Rating: The earthy undertone is very apparent if you whiff from the bottle (I know, I know, never the best indicator) but it really flowers when it is diluted! The sweetness and light green basil notes come out. I still think it is best mixed with other essential oils for beginners not used to real essential oils and not fragrant oil synthetics.

Rating: A scent you can't turn your nose from. Not only does it beg you to smell it, but the aromatherapeutic effects are great for treating seizures.

Rating: I am completely addicted to this oil! It has a strong anise undertone but is mellowed out by the earthy basil scent. I use it mixed with teatree and rosemary and aloe gel juice as a detangler and lice detourant in my daughters hair it hides the scent of the teatree and also softens the hair. I will be buying this by the bucket!

Rating: Have always loved the smell of basil and this oil was such a pleasant surprise! Smells stronger but still has the same aroma as the basil herb in my kitchen. Mixing it with pink grapefruit makes a wonderful scent in CP soap.

Rating: This has an amazing scent. It doesn't smell like the Italian basil, it smells more like the Asian basil. It has a sweet anise like scent. There is also hints of mint and a green scent. It is a very complicated, exotic scent. It is also very strong. I'm very pleased with this oil. It came as a lovely surprise. I used this in a bath salt designed to help with weight loss and it worked like a charm. The scent is very energizing and it really helps me concentrate when I study for school. I will definitely buy this again.

Rating: Very strong-smelling oil so use sparingly. I find that it smells just a tad too "sweet" so I might try the organic basil next time. My husband mentioned that it smells a bit like licorice to him. I used it in a massage oil and it does help ease some of the aches and pains. I also used it with lemongrass in my insect repellent; smells much better than the store-bought stuff and isn't loaded with chemicals.

Rating: I bought this for use in the car but the smell does not appeal to me. I plan on using it mixed with other oils and follow some of suggestions from other users so that I can get some usage out of it.
Rating: There are very few herbs I don't really care for but Basil has always been one of them. My son talked me into getting this sweet Basil EO as Basil has always been one of his favorites. I'm so glad he did! It's a wonderful scent that I will definately continue to use in my herbal preparations.

Rating: This Basil is a wonderful smelling oil. Blend it with Frankincense and grapefruit for a very refreshing smell throughout the house and to alleviate lung congestion.
By:Vanice, Cambridge, Ontario Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 19-Dec-2006
Rating: This is my favourite basil essential oil, ever! The smell is both refreshing and complex. It is more stimulating than basil linalol, which suits me fine when used for stimulating compassion for self or others, and as an appetizer and respiratory tonic.

Rating: A wonderful useful oil, Ocimum basilicum or Sweet basil -has an aroma just like the spice you might use in your pasta sauce: the aromas of the various basils are so different that it has been suggested to classify them according to the aroma, instead of botanical relationship. It is light, fresh, fruity-spicy with a balsamic, anise-like undertone. It has wonderful Aromatherapy properties: warming and toning. Restoring peace of mind and counteracting depression. Clarifying, uplifting, energizing. Blends well with: lavender, clary sage, thyme, cedarwood, bergamot, geranium, hyssop. Basil clears the head, relieves mind fatigue, giving clarity of thought. The oil is for EXTERNAL USE ONLY and it should always be diluted with a suitable carrier oil before applying to the skin. It is non-toxic and non-irritant but with possible sensitization in some individuals. Do not use if pregnant. Used for aches and pains, bronchitis, childbirth, colds, concentration, congestion, depression, fatigue, 'flu, head colds, headaches, herpes, hysteria, increased awareness, increasing production of breast milk, indecisiveness, indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, lack of confidence, menstruation, mental fatigue, mental stimulation, migraine, nausea, negative thoughts, oily skin, physical fatigue, rattled nerves, rheumatism, scanty periods, shingles, sinusitis, sore muscles, sorrowfulness, stimulating adrenal, stress, uplifting. Also known as Common Basil, Joy-of-the-Mountain, True Sweet Basil, European Basil. I give this one an excellent as it's one of the better one's I've used.
