Product Abstract: Labdanum is a small gummy shrub also known as a rockrose, which grows up to 3 meters tall, with lance-shaped leaves that are white and furry on the underside, and fragrant white flowers. Cistus ladanifer offers a sticky brown resin that is collected and cleaned, then processed by solvent extraction to produce the thick, resinous oil. Having a long history as a fixative in perfumery, in ancient times, the resin was scraped from the fur of goats and sheep that had grazed on the shrubs. Collected by shepherds, it was sold to coastal traders. The false beards worn by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt were actually the labdanum-soaked hair of these goats.
Note: We would recommend placing the bottle in a very hot water bath, and changing the water frequently until it is back to its liquid state. Be sure to shake before use.
Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Rating: Mmmmm this one is nice, and as a previous reviewer mentioned it is VERY similar to beeswax. However, beeswax absolute is atrociously expensive, and this is a great smell-alike. Sweet and amber-ish, great base note. Super thick, so needs to be heated to get it out of the bottle.

Rating: This is one of my new favourite smells. It reminds me of beeswax. it is sweet but also a bit musky. Very meditative and reminiscent of amber. I cannot stop smelling it, it is very alluring.
Rating: Has a pleasant, delicate yet complex pitch/tar/pine smell that I associate with the smell of lumps of sap welling out of drying split wood in my parents' basement. (Possibly from Western Redcedar?) I've only tried it on its own as a perfume: wears very close to the skin, incenselike.

Rating: This is a perfect oil for a perfume blend, a bit floral with a subtle sweet scent. Wonderful blended with sandalwood.

Rating: one of the most beautiful aromas, i feel uplifted and relaxed as soon as i open the bottle. the scent is indeed 'amber'. blends very well in meditation, earthy blends, i have found. i also find that it blends well with vanilla and nut butters.
i did also, however, find that even in warm weather, the warm (even hot) bath for the bottle didn't work, i instead pried the dropper part off of the bottle and used a clean skewer to retrieve the beautiful resin.
Rating: I completely agree with Julie's review! I have had this Labdanum for a few months and have slowly been won over by it as a fragrance. As a base note it is quite distinctive; it really adds a touch of sophistication. I am also using it as a replacement for amber in recipes.
I shall definitely try it out in medicinal oil blends! Thx Julie for sharing that suggestion as a way of masking some of the odiferous smells!

Rating: Not very strong, but complex. Sweet like the benzoin, but richer, a bit darker and smokier, and smelling a bit like Virginian cedarwood. VERY thick, more of a paste. Will probably need heating or a spatula to remove. For the price compared with the quality and extraction method, I give 4 stars. I am interested to see how it adds depth and spice to my cosmetics.

Rating: This stuff is AMAZING!! It really should be a staple in everyone's collection. It's nice to have something pleasant and useful to blend into the healing oils that don't smell so great on their own, or that people personally don't like. It's like the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down. ;D For perfumery, it's indispensable. By itself it makes a rich, mysterious scent that lingers and beguiles. It smells so beautiful. It goes well with spices, and florals, and woodsy and earthy scents, it's superbly versatile.

Rating: I simply love this scent I am using it for fragrances and its a base that compliments the other oils, Amazing how a oil can make up such an amazing fragrance.

Rating: After first trying this oil I immediately order 100mL of it. It is utterly addictive. Deep, rich, complex. A bit sweet, layered, and beautiful. I keep a bit of it by my bed to sniff whenever I like, and I love to dab a bit between my wrists or behind my ears-it is my new favourite perfume. Absolutely addictive, I can see why the pharaohs loved it!

Rating: Gives a lovely, exotic richness to my blends...I bought it because of the history of the oil. It didn't disappoint!!!!

Rating: This is a staple in my perfumery. Absolutely adore it! Gives a rich depth to my floral perfumes.
Rating: When I first opened my bottle and inhaled, I immediately thought of Johnny Depp. It's the sort of complex, exotic, mysterious scent he would wear. Absolutely addicted to this and will buy a much larger bottle next time. I can hardly wait to try it with cinnamon and orange. It also deepens any citrus blend.

Rating: Wow ! My first encounter with this oil. The smell is complex and I am looking forward to playing with it and making earthy-moss blends (with vetiver or pineleaf, maybe). It is a very exotic smelling oil.
Wow ! Ma première expérience avec cette huile essentielle. J'ai häte de concocter des mélanges. Il faut retourner la sentir et se laisser apprivoiser. C'est une huile vraiment exotique.

Rating: At first i wasn't too crazy about it, but everytime i smell it, i enjoy the fragrance more. Very sweet and musky, reminds me of incense.

Rating: Wow!!! Once you get this oil diluted enough . (it's thick . LOL) blend it this way for the most relaxing bath ever !!! ... 2 drops labdanum ... 4 drops S. African geranium. I dbl the amount and soak for 20 - 30 min.
Talk about being peaceful, relaxed and NON_STRESSED!!! This oil is also known as the 'rock rose'.
Rating: beautiful scent, very "amber" like. The packaging, however, really isn't appropriate -get yourself a good quality dropper or dilute it first, as it's extremely thick, and will NEVER drip out on its own.
By:Lucie, Calgary, Alberta Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2008
Rating: It smells beautiful, but be aware that it is a VERY thick essential oil. It has a similar consistency to thick chocolate sauce - the kind you put on a sundae. It definitely will not drip out of the bottle, so you have to scoop it out.
Rating: I just got mine today. I have read about this particular essential oil in a perfumery book I have and was very curious as to its scent. It is used as a base in a number of the perfume recipes and I now know why. It is a wonderful rich herbaceous, balsamic odor with amber undertones. I have blended it with Lavender and Bergamot...Heavenly.
