Product Abstract: Some thirty species of sandalwood occur throughout Asia, Australia and the Pacific region, six of which are native to Australia. This species is presently harvested in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, under strict controls. The evergreen is parasitic, burrowing its roots into nearby trees to gain sustenance for the first seven years, leaving the other to die. To produce oil this tree must be over 30 years old, preferably around 40-50 years when it has reached its peak for oil production. The high value of the wood and the oil has led to a steady decline of native sandalwood trees thus increasing efforts to establish plantations. New Directions Aromatics sources the oil by ethical means, which includes state-sponsored auctions. Sandalwood originally comes from the Sanskrit word candanam, borrowed by the Greeks as sandanon. The documented use of Sandalwood goes back 4000 years to India, Egypt, Greece and Rome when many temples and structures were built with it. Because of over-harvesting, this practice has steadily decreased to the point where Sandalwood is now only used for its oil.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping), be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Highly recommended!! [I couldn't figure out how to edit my review from 2 years ago, so writing another one to correct my first impressions --] I love this sandalwood! It ages beautifully! After two years it has developed into something much closer to the traditional Mysore scent, than when I first opened the bottle. Plus -- it has developed a truly gorgeous orange/orange peel note that I don't find in Mysore. I've now had this same bottle from the batch I reviewed two years ago, and all the "funk" I noticed when I first reviewd it (as well as some sharper more astringent notes I didn't mention] has disappeared. The basic sandalwood scent is getting richer, plus it is developing those orange notes. [At the same time I bought this, I bought some "Mysore" sandalwood from another supplier that was cheaper than New Directions Indian, but more expensive than ND Australian .... and at first I preferred the cheaper Mysore one, as it had a more definite sandalwood smell, without the odd funk. BUT two years on, the ND Australian Sandalwood is way nicer -- it is richer and more complex. The Mysore from the other supplier hasn't developed at all, and retains a much stronger whiff of alcohol .. I think it might be a chemical dupe. Anyway -- New Directions Australian Sandalwood is awesome. If you want a really good natural sandalwood scent and can invest in storing it for a year or two, you will wind up with a really beautiful alternative to Mysore, not exactly the same because of the orange notes but so affordable vis a vis the quality.

Nice whiff from the bottle but has a bit of a funk at first on the skin. (I test undiluted on my inner elbow.) Takes a while (meaning 3-4 hours) for the funk to die down. BUT after that, the proper sandalwood smell starts to take over. (I'm comparing to an old bottle of mysore on my other arm.) Does anyone know of a good blend with another oil that will erase the funk and highlight the pure sandalwood smell more immediately?? The price is right, and based on other reviews, I'm thinking of this as an investment: will experiment with some blends, put most of it in storage and test again in a year or two.

This is another essential oil I got from New Directions in 2007 and left to age until 2012. At the time, I thought I could take it or leave it as the oil couldn't touch my Mysore. Not disappointing, just not what I was hoping for. Today I have a big regret... that I didn't buy a whole lot more! This oil aged into a specimen of magnificence. Give this e.o. a chance because it is a serious contender in the world of sandalwood.
