Ascophyllum nodosum - a brown seaweed commonly known as knotted, knobbed or bladder wrack, or kelp - is one of many species which form part of the botanical order or algae.
Appearance: Greenish brown powder with a strong pungent odor.
Benefits: Seaweed Powder is a rich source of vitamins including vitamins B12 (not found in land plants), vitamin E, amino acids, minerals, trace elements, and other nutrients. Seaweed powder makes for an effective cleansing and exfoliating agent. When applied to the skin, Seaweed act as a powerful purifier that draws out impurities while imparting benefits to the skin. It helps to slough off dead skin cells from the surface of the skin which gives the skin a healthy, revitalized, and glowing appearance. Seaweed contains fatty acids, which makes it suitable for use on irritated skin as it will help retain skin's moisture levels, and alleviate chapping, cracking and roughness caused by dryness of the skin. It can also be used on oily and acne-prone skin. Seaweed Powder is suitable for all skin types.
Application: Seaweed Powder can be used in face masks, body wraps, soap making, body scrubs and bath powders.
Caution: Persons with an allergy to iodine should avoid using this product. This powder has a strong pungent odor that some may find offensive, so test product before using.
Seaweed Face Mask Recipe:
Combine 1 tbsp of seaweed powder to 2 tbsp of water and 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin to form a paste. Apply to the skin and leave on for about 10 minutes before washing off with warm water. Floral water or aloe vera gel juice can be substituted for water.
Seaweed Body Wrap Recipe:
Combine ½ cup seaweed powder, 3 tbsp jojoba oil and 2 drops of lavender oil in a bowl. Slowly add water while stirring the mixture until it forms into a paste. Apply paste to various parts of the body and cover with plastic wrap. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Floral water or aloe vera gel juice can be substituted for water.

Rating: I used this in a facial mask along with aloe gel juice, hemp oil, vegetable glycerin and a couple drops of lavender. I applied to face and neck then rinsed off 20 minutes later. My skin never looked so good and felt so soft. I will definitely be using this as a regular skin care regimen. Great product!
Rating: I use this powder to make facial mask and soap. It helps calming down my hormones acnes on my face and on my back. A very good ingredient! If doing a facial mask, I usually add clay powder to make easier to spread since the seaweed powder alone clumps. If adding to soap (for gifts), I will add EO with stronger scent (like peppermint) to cover up the seaweed odour. Not everyone can stand the smell, but I am ok with it.

Rating: This powder smells awful. I absolutely despise working with it, but the smell does cover up quite well when I mix it with other powders for hair masks. I would buy it again for the benefit, but really, it smells awful.

Rating: This has a very strong, fishy, seaweed scent. I will have to add some EO to this for a mask. I felt like I was putting a dirty turtle tank on my face! I really can't stomach the smell at all so this will not be a staple for me. BUT - the amount in my jar was loaded to the brim! and the product is 100% true to what it is.

Rating: A very precious product at a pretty low price. Very versatile. I make a salt and seaweed spa soap that really helps for blood circulation. Can be used in wraps, baths etc.
A surveiller.

Rating: I used it to make lemongrass MP soap, my husband just loves it. It doesn't smell like seaweed strongly, but it gets better when adding essential oils to it.
Thanks Richard from Quebec provided me the good tip on lemongrass soap, and thanks NDA for the great product with great price!!

Rating: used in CP soaps with a peppermint EO and ylang ylang - was amazing! Also use in a mask with green clay and cucumber peel, again, very very nice! Did not accelerate trace in CP soaps

Rating: A beautiful gentle green color with a much milder seaweed smell than I was expecting. It is much less pungent than seaweed I have had from NDA in the past. I add rosehip powder extract as a way of covering the seaweed odour in my facial masks and get the benefit from both seaweed and rosehips! I am looking forward to trying it out in my seaweed soaps.

Rating: I used this product in a cp soap batch. Result? Perfect.
The mild algae smell was completely masked by the essential oils I used in my batch.
The dry product is a dark green colour which did not colour my soap at all (I was also working with titanium dioxide and other extracts).
I am extremely satisfied with this product and I will be repurchasing it and using it in future cp soap batches.
Rating: The powder itself smells a little fishy, but by the time you add some EO's and a floral water you can't notice the smell. Excellent ingredient in my face masks, body wraps, and facial soaps!! WIll be repurchasing
Rating: I like adding this to the Australian Green Clay in a 4:1 ratio. I find that adding lime EO helps the smell; don't go wasting rose otto, ylang, etc. here trying to pretty-up the smell here. Keep the product basic + you'll be pleased.
Rating: The actual colour is darker than the picture above, however the result in the cp soap is great.

Rating: Mixes well with French Green clay for lovely mask. The smell doesn't bother me at all when several drops of EO or floral waters are added to the mask.

Rating: I really like what this does for my skin. I mix it with clay sometimes and I can notice a difference after using it. Yes, the smell is pretty gross but it is seaweed after all!
Rating: Strong beach seaweed smell and I like it as it wakes me up. It really does bring memories. It does moisturize the skin as well. Easy to add other ingredients as well
By:Vladimir, Toronto, Ontario Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 29-Apr-2011
Rating: Does have a very strong fishy smell. My skin is sensitive to natural skin care products, but was not aggravated when this product was used as a mask. As a second benefit, it did not cause any breakouts, although it did not seem to extensively benefit or heal any breakout areas I had on my face at the time of use.
I tried mixing the powder with a keratin base as a hair mask, and did not bind well to the liquid keratin, making the mixture lumpy. The fishy smell lingered in my hair after rinsing and rewashing. My hair is dyed white, and the product temporarily tinted my hair darker. Would not recommend using in hair products
Rating: This has a very strong seaweed smell. But, it's seaweed, and a strong scent is expected. I paired it with citrus essential oils for a detox salt bath and the citrus really masks the scent to allow you to get the beneficial properties of the seaweed without smelling fishy.

Rating: I like this seaweed powder for using in many products along with using as a very nice facial mask. It does have a fairly strong odor but its natural so its worth it.

Rating: I used it in CP soap and the colour turned out kind of brown, I was hoping for more green. Unfortunately, I won't be ordering this again as the smell reminds me of a barn :(

Rating: Love this in a face mask...does wonders for your skin...the smell does not bother me at all...brings back memories of when I was a kid playing on the beach in Nova Scotia...you can't beat the price and I love the fact that New Directions puts a best used by date on the container...I bought it in May 2012 and it is best used by October 2015 which gives me lots of time to use it up...thanks New Directions for all the great products and for delivering them the next day after I ordered them!!!
Rating: This definitely smells like seaweed; like a west coast beach at low tide. And it's a much darker green than shown in the picture. I tried a mask made with just this and water, and found it made my face burn, so now I mix it with French Green Clay when I do masks, though I'm not sure it does much of anything. I think the best use I've found for it so far is swirling it through soap, though if you use too much the soap will leave green streaks.

Rating: The smell didn't bother me one bit. Made a great mask along with French green clay and green tea extract. Will be buying again.

Rating: I tried the above face mask recipe and had my own little spa night! It was great and my skin felt wonderful after.
Rating: GET THIS. Try and LOVE IT.
It's amazing. Seriously it's like a spa in a bottle.
Just add a bit of water to the powder until its a paste and paint it on your face with a fat powder brush.
It took out ALL the junk from my pores after I used it today (in conjunction with the mud mask).
Love at first facial seriously. :)
Rating: I used this as a Face Mask the one suggested right here on this page, it does have a very strong smell but I liked it, it reminded me of being at a beach on a hot day and during this cold winter it was a nice memory to conjure up, I have sensitive skin and this made my skin feel really beautifully clean, the next morning my skint was still feeling great.
Rating: Hello! I use seaweed powder for one of my cold process soap recipes. It leaves your skin very soft. My family and customers simply love it. It has a strong low tide smell to it when you mix it in your oil however I use Lemongrass essential oil to perfume my soap (about 3 Oz of it for a 5 pounds batch of soap) and the smell it very invigorating. You still smell the seaweed in the background but it is now compounding with the Lemongrass to give an attractive smell.
When you mix it with your oil it turns to a pale shade of green, like avocado flesh. However after the gelling phase of the cold process it will turn a very dark, almost black green. You can make interesting swirls by keeping 1/3 of the batch before adding the seaweed and instead adding color. It tried with the emerald color, but it turned out to dark and hard to differentiate from the rest. Neon green or even neon yellow will give a very nice contrast
Rating: I didn't find the smell too strong and I think it's a must in body wraps or masks.

Rating: I used the seawead mixed with french green clay for a facial mask and the results are amasing, the seaweed smell is present but not strong.

Rating: How could you not include seaweed into your skin care routine? It has nutrients and minerals and even has a slimming/toning effect on cellulite, not that I have any... who am I kidding?! NDA's Seaweed Powder smells exactly how it should smell. It feels like I am basking along the shoreline at the beach. I haven't tried my EOs with it, I wonder how they will blend together?

Rating: I incorporated this liberally as a facial and body mud. The resulting smell was stronger than I expect at first but after a while reminds me of seaweed salad at Japanese restaurants. Being Canadian made is a plus.

Rating: This seaweed powder is wonderful. I didn't find the smell strong at all, nice and mild. Mixed with dead sea mud and neroli floral water it made a very refreshing mask. I look forward to using it in other applications.

Rating: I really like this. I add it to my lotions and love that it offers such great qualities without any additives. Some companies sell a liquid extract that has other ingredients that I'm really not fond of.

Rating: I combine it with the Australian Pink clay for a mask and while it works great I just can't get past the smell! I add a couple of drops of essential oils to make it tolerable for me. It smells like seaweed should, it's a personal thing not a problem with the product.

Rating: I am a Spa Therapist Student. I recently ordered this product. And, have used it on a couple of my clients during my practical training and they were amazed at the results. I used this product for my practical doing a few Seaweed Body Wraps. I used Seaweed before and didn't care for the smell of it. New Directions Seaweed smells fresh and beautiful. My clients love this product. I would order from New Directions again.
I have to comment on the reliable customer service and fast shipping.
Thank you, New Directions. I would definately order from you again.
