Not only can Eucalyptus Oil be applied topically, it can also be diffused to reap its benefits through scent. When diffused, Eucalyptus energizes and creates an uplifting atmosphere. Traditionally, some varieties of Eucalyptus have even been used in mosquito repellent sprays, while others continue to be used to relax with massages and provide soothing feeling.

How to Choose Your Eucalyptus Oil

To decide which eucalyptus variety best suits you, it is beneficial to first understand what it is composed of.An oil’s chemical profile can contain hundreds of constituents that collectively influence its properties. Though many oils may have a similar composition, no two oils are exactly the same. An understanding of the main constituents provides a general sense of the oil’s potential benefits.

Caution: These oils should be diluted for topical use and avoided by those with high blood pressure, epilepsy, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some varieties are also not recommended for use amongst young children. Essential oils have different dermal maximums and recommended usage levels. It is important to consult safety manuals and  a Certified Aromatherapist for appropriate dilution guidelines, specific to the essential oil in question. A patch test is also always recommended before use.

Main constituent: 1-8 Cineole (commonly known as eucalyptol)
1-8 cineole rich species of eucalyptus is believed to have strong therapeutic properties. This means that eucalyptus varieties with high cineole are aids in clearing the air when diffused. Of these varieties, Eucalyptus smithii is considered to be the mildest of the eucalyptus oils, as well as Eucalyptus radiata.

Main constituent:  CitronellalThe reason the Eucalyptus Lemon has a citrus scent is because of the large presence of Citronellal rather than Cineole. Citronellal is a powerful anti-microbial cleanser that is ideal for acne-prone skin and can generally be used for cleansing the skin. Citronellal can be a mild to moderate skin irritant. As with all essential oils, a patch test is always recommended before use. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is not to be confused with PMD, which is sometimes used interchangeably with “Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.” Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is refined Eucalyptus Oil to increase the concentration of naturally occurring PMD, which is used in commercial insect repellent.

Main Constituents: Piperitone and α-phellandrene
Our Eucalyptus dives is a piperitone chemotype Eucalyptus. A chemotype is a chemical variant of a plant that displays notably different main constituents even though it is still the same species. Differences can be due to different growing conditions, which bring about an alternate constituent profile. For instance, there is a Cineole type Eucalyptus dives for which Cineol is the main constituent. It has a unique scent among the Eucalyptus species. Instead of having the typical medicinal scent that is caused by the constituent 1,8 Cineole, it has a more peppery, minty, earthy scent; however, this variety provides many of the same benefits as Eucalyptus species that are high in Cineole. Piperitone is a ketone and ketones are reputed to revitalize the skin and to make it appear to be firmer. α-Phellandrene is a terpene, which is a constituent that exhibits a strong odour and is said to enrich the properties of other essential oil components.
