Shea Butter 100% Natural (Ghana)

Average Product Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Based on 51 Customer Reviews)

This butter is extracted from the Shea nut & is grayish to ivory white in color with characteristic odor. It is creamy yellow in color with a mild nutty odor. It is solid at room temperature and rather hard in consistency.

Common Uses: Used predominantly for skin care, Shea Butter is hailed for its protecting and emollient properties. Rich in cinnamon acid, it also protects the skin from UV rays and therefore can be included in skin care products for the sun. It can also be used to make massage butters, body butters, lip balms, as a moisturizing agent in soaps and shaving creams, and as a treatment for minor skin wounds and irritations.

Recommended Usage:
Lotions & Creams: 2 - 20 %
Balms: 5 – 100 %
Bar Soaps: 5 - 20 %
Hair Conditioners: 1 – 10 %

When adding butters to creams and lotions, it might be necessary to gently warm them until the texture can be incorporated into the final product. Using a hand blender, create a vortex with your cream or lotion and drizzle your melted butter to fully incorporate. For addition in soaps, the general rule of thumb is 1 tablespoon per pound. As with most raw materials, results may vary, so we strongly recommend small, lab scale batches prior to any commercial manufacturing.

Shelf Life: This butter should be stored in a cool dark place and has a shelf-life of approximately 2 - 3 years when stored properly.

what a great product - it may take a while to absorb, but the effect is worth the wait. I whip it with some EOs to make what I affectionately call "geezer butter" for my 80-year old dad's hands. he's a piano player and suffers from cracked cuticles in winter, but this shea butter helps to keep him supple and playing. I love the slightly smoky scent, too.

Great price! I found the odor to be a little strong and harder to cover up with EO's if your making a butter but when adding it into other products its fantastic. Leaves your skin silky soft and takes away any traces of dry skin. Good product.

Love this butter. The scent is a bit strong at first. When I make a batch of butter I use half this butter and half the refined shea, mix in essential oils and it's beautiful. My customers are very happy with it.

The Shea butter I bought has a light, beige color. Although the description says yellow, it is more beige if anything which is a bonus because this is the real deal. I am so happy with my purchase of Shea butter. I purchased 1 kg of Shea butter for only $11.40 and judging by the quantity, it will last me a long time to come. I am so happy that I have found a place that is selling real Shea butter for such a great price and is located in the GTA.

I find this shea to be good value and serviceable. I have a friend who brings shea butter straight from Africa when she can. That being said, this shea is not the most amazing thing I've ever used but it is consistently good and you know when you get it it will work well. This batch smells a little burnt IMO but you won't really notice it in a product. Just a testament to the fact it is still made in an artisan environment in Africa.

I like the smell, I guess it's not for everyone. It's nutty, but not in a way I'm used to. It blended well with the oils I use, but you have to choose wisely. My only complaint is the graininess, but it's normal with the unrefined version.

I just received my shea and it's very nice on the skin. Shipping was very fast. I expected there to be a smell but it is extremely potent-like nut and campfire. However it seems to lessen after a little while on your skin. I'm going to try scenting a bit to see if it helps. I would suggest the refined shea butter if you don't like strong smells. That is what i will be getting next time. even though I wanted to avoid the refining. Thank you for the product

I love this Shea Butter...it makes my skin very soft...when I react to certain products and I get rashes from it... I find that applying Shea Butter on my face or the rash area...within a few days my face is rash free... I tried other products on the market...and it did not get rid of the rash...I had the rash on my face for a month an a half...my friend introduce me to Shea butter and I took it home...within a couples days my skin is smooth, healthier, younger, and rash free...ever since than I learn to appreciate organic products and learning how to make cream other cosmetic products... Beginning inventory is quite expensive...but I hope it's save me a lot of money in the long run...and hopefully one day I will start selling my products....

The smell of this butter IS potent, as another reviewer put it. I can't quite describe it, it smells very fatty in a strange way. The 500g I received did not have a campfire smell. I was a bit surprised to see that the "chunks" of the shea butter had white-ish spots. I thought it may be mold at first, but I don't think so because it melts into the skin the same as the rest of the butter. And it feels VERY nice.

This butter has a great constancy, a bit softer and smoother than cocoa butter, and actually they work great mixed together. The smell is quite potent, and more like an almost an over ripe nut compared to almond or other common nuts. But that's nothing a couple of drops of vanilla absolute or benzoin, can't remedy.

Just got a kilo of this and it is awful! It is not yellow, or creamy, or nutty smelling as advertised...what I got is grayish-green, crumbly and smells like a 3 day old campfire. I tried whipping it 60/40 with aloe gel and scenting heavily with vanilla FO and lavender EO and by the next day all you can smell is the 3 day old campfire. I am VERY disappointed in this product and will not order this again. :(

This is my "middle" shea butter. I have a strongly yellow coloured, strongly scented shea butter from elsewhere that I use when I need a yellow product, and I use the organic when I need a white product. The mellow tan colour and odour of this natural shea butter blend well with NDA's benzoin.

What I love the most about this product is the color and the smell. When you first open up the jar, the smell is very strong. I made lip balm and I didn't put flavor in them. I got very good feedback for the smell and taste of the balms, they enjoyed it was a natural flavor & smell. I prevents and heals chaplips in winter also, that was the other very possitive feedbacks I got. When used in lotion, the scent becomes very light, it absorbs quickly and leaves the skin very soft. I tried using it alone on the skin, but I was left with a greasy mess, so I recomend making a lotion.

Shea butter is the number one product for a deep hydratation of the skin. I make a soap that contains not less than 40% of shea butter. My customers tell me that they no longer need lotion on their skin, after a regular use. Shea butter is good for baby skin problems as cradle cap. Pregnant women can use it to avoid stretch marks. A regular use of shea butter rejuvenates skin and gives it a silky appearance and feeling. It contains a lot of vitamins. I always keep some at home. New Directions provides us high quality shea butter at a very reasonnable price. Shea butter is environmentally safe and anybody can have great benefit for using it.

I really like the Shea butter, I have found that when mixing it for a body butter or lotion bar that I have to cool it very quickly or it makes little beads that don't stay mixed well in the blend. But I've heard this is the same with all shea butters.

New Directions Aromatics Response:

The Natural Shea Butter is certainly a great product, and one we are proud to have ethically sourced from Africa. It is in its' most natural state, and that appeals to many of our customers, but it does require a little extra attention when being used in the manufacturing process.

We do offer two other varieties: our refined Shea Butter, and our Certified Organic Shea Butter. Both of these products will have a smoother consistency, but the slight increase in pricing reflects the additional handling.
