Patchouli Essential Oil (Dark)

Average Product Rating: 4.9 / 5 (Based on 36 Customer Reviews)

Botanical Name: Pogostemon Cablin
Plant Part: Leaves
Extraction Method: Steam Distilled
Origin: Indonesia
Description: Patchouli is a very fragrant herb with soft oval leaves and square stems. It grows from 2 to 3 feet in height and provides an unusual odor that is nonetheless characteristic of patchouli when the leaves are rubbed. The color of the patchouli oil is affected by the distillation machine. If distillation is done in a stainless steel vessel the color of the oil will be light, but if done in an iron vessel the color will be darker.
Color: Golden orange to dark reddish brown viscous liquid.
Common Uses: Patchouli is recognized by aromatherapists as being effective for combating nervous disorders, helping with dandruff, sores, skin irritations and acne. The specific properties include use as an antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-emetic, antimicrobal, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, antitoxic, antiviral, aphrodisiac, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, digestive, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicidal, nerving, prophylactic, stimulating and tonic agent. In the perfumery industry, it is interesting to note that Patchouli improves with age, and that the aged product is what is preferred over freshly harvested. In aromatherapy, Patchouli is an excellent fixative that can help extend other, more expensive oils.
Consistency: Thick
Note: Base
Strength of Aroma: Medium
Blends well with: Sandalwood, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Rose, Orange, Cassia, Myrrh and Opoponax
Aromatic Scent: Patchouli has a warm, earthy aroma with fresh fruit - like tones.
History: Before it became popular in Europe, Indian shawls and Indian ink were identified by the unique patchouli odor.
Cautions: None Known.

not at all what I expected from patchouli EO, but I like the bitter, slightly acrid earthiness of this one. I recently bought trial-sizes of several FO's and found every single one of them too sweet and cloying - I was worried I wouldn't use any of them. this will counteract the sweetness and make a great bottom anchor for a lot of spicy, earthy and green combinations - those FOs won't go to waste.

I love how this patchouli has aged.. Smells better now than when first purchased and has thickened a bit over time too. Patchouli, as with lavender are staples in my medicine cabinet.

This definitely has an earthy smell!! I love it! In the middle of winter it reminds me of playing in the garden and the dirt. Mmmmm! Highly recommend if you want an earthy base.

This patchouli is amazing! I love its deep, earthy, spicy, piquant scent, and I simply can't get enough of it. It's great with lavender, and does wonders to offset the sweetness of more floral scents like ylang ylang. I look forward to seeing how the scent matures over time. It's definitely worth getting 100mL instead of 15mL--you'll find uses for it!

This Patchouli is so deep and rich....I've used other patchouli's that need time to age before they even smell like patchouli. This one will give my lotions, body butters and shampoos the earthiness right away and will deepen even further ... Absolutely Fabulous !!!

Deep and earthy. This is my first patchouli and I'm not sure if I'm a fan yet. I guess I'll have to play around with some blends!

I thought this dark patchouli would be thicker, but regardless, I love the smell and it's doing an amazing job of shrinking those mystery balls of I-don't-know-what They are like cysts, I suppose, that show up on the hands and wrists. Overnight one large and rather painful one showed up on the top of my hand, and it was BIG. I immediately started rubbing this lovely scented patchouli, neat on the area, and in less than 2 weeks, it has shrunk to half it's size and is no longer painful. I sometimes combine it with some lavender neat, as I understand that both can do something for these cyst-like creatures that appear on the hands and wrists. I wasn't sure it would work, but seeing is believing. I see there's an organic patchouli out now too. I must try that as well, as order another bottle of the dark, so I can let it age a little. But I'm still waiting on the South African lavender to reappear before I place another order.

At first when I smelled this it was not one of my favorites, but I have grown to love this scent, it has an exotic aroma to it , And I find it to blend well with other EO 's such as Ylang Ylang, and especially Sweet Orange

Wonderful, earthy scent. I don't normally like patchouli, but I'll be using this in soap and probably lotion as well. I'm always amazed at the quality and price from New Directions.

Since years, I never found a patchouli oil better than this one. I just receive my last order and I am not disappointed at all !Same high quality since years ! I use patchouli with lavender, vetiver and other of my blends. Depuis plusieurs annnée, je commande mon huile essentielle de patchouli de New Directions. La qualité est toujours aussi bonne pour cette huile. Je l'utilise avec la lavande, le vétiver et les conifères (huiles essentielles).

I can still remember the very first time I ever smelled patchouli. I was smitten! It continues to be one of my very favourite scents and I have worn it for years. The New Directions Patchouli Dark is wonderful, deep and rich. Perfect strangers have come up to me and asked, "What are you wearing? I love it!" I would highly recommend this product to anyone who loves that great Summer of Love scent!

I love the scent on its own but the beauty of Patchouli comes from its ability to enhance so many other essential oils and make the perfect blends. I am a cold process soaper among other things and Patchouli lends its staying power to blends through that process. I have yet to have a customer with eczema whom did not respond to the powers of patchouli in various combinations in creams and balms. Of course the fact that it is the only oil that I know of that improves with age versus disipating makes it my first choice oil. New Directions does have the best prices for this high quality oil. If I could rate it excellent + I would.

This is the most wonderful smelling patchouli I've ever had the pleasure of smelling! Deep with woody tones, and when combined with rosewood lavender or ylang ylang... ah! definitely not a cheap hippie smell!

Absolutely love it ;) use in lotions, shower gel and on a piece of leather for a car freshner. Had a lady ask what I was wearing and if she could take me home she loved it! Also takes me back to the 60's when it was so popular with the Hippies...ahh to be young again.

Not cloyingly sweet, and reminiscent of sandalwood, this dark patchouli lends a warm colour to products, eliminating the need for unnatural colouring.

Patchouli can successully be mixed with other essential oils (orange, cinnamon etc) and its earthy smell is hot and comforting. A good patchouli soap is addictive. This oil is very good.

I've used patchouli oils from other sources, and none of them compare to this one. It doesn't smell as nice straight out from the bottle as it does diluted in a mixture or in the bath. I put one drop in a 10ml roll-on bottle of (3% diluted in jojoba) neroli oil, and presto! Absolutely gorgeous personal perfume!

Any patchouli fan will want this! However, the scent is so rich that it could resemble tobaco if used excessively. Used sparingly, it produces excellent effect. Great for lip chap!

This patchouli is truly wonderful...great full roundedness very beautiful base note. Patchouli is believed to help prevent the spread of disease. The essential oil is for EXTERNAL USE ONLY and it should always be diluted with a suitable carrier oil before applying to the skin. It is non-toxic and non-irritant but with possible sensitization in some individuals. Use for acne, chapped & cracked skin, dermatitis, eczema, frigidity, fungal infections, incense, insect repellent, oily hair & skin, weeping eczema, wounds, wrinkles, athlete's foot, dandruff, hair care, impetigo, nervous exhaustion, open pores, sores, stress related conditions. Also known as Patchouly, pachaput, Pogostemon patchouly. This one is one of the best around, and I think improves with age.
